20th of July – International Chess Day!

In 1966, at the suggestion of UNESCO, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) established World Chess Day, which is celebrated every year on July 20.

The International Chess Federation ( FIDE ) is the governing body of chess and regulates all international chess competitions. It was founded on July 20, 1924 in Paris (France), under the motto “Gens una Sumus” (from Latin and means “We are one family”) and today celebrates its 96th anniversary.

In 1999, FIDE was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a global sports organization. The International Chess Federation includes 188 member federations, being among the largest sports organizations in the world.

In October 2019, the International Chess Federation renewed its leadership, electing a new president: Arkady Dvorkovich, who was the main organizer of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia between 2012 and 2018.  FIDE is based in Lausanne (Switzerland), a city that hosts several sports associations, including the International Olympic Committee.

The Romanian Chess Federation was a founding member of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1924 and has been a member of the European Chess Union (ECU) since 1990. The first president of the Romanian Chess Federation was the writer Mihail Sadoveanu. Currently, the president of the Romanian Chess Federation is Sorin Avram Iacoban from Iași.
